The first was named Julie. She was tall and thin, with beautiful blonde hair that layed nicely on her proper shoulders. She was talented! She could paint, any picture she had in her head was almost magically portrayed on a piece of paper. She was musical! She could play anything on her harp, crowds would gather every time she touched the strings. She won awards, she was always surrounded by friends who loved her, and her fans, and she was almost always the happiest person.
The second girl was named Sara. She was also tall, not quite as thin as Julie, but just as beautiful. She had eyes that people often related to the sea. Her brown hair wasn't quite as tamed, but it was shiny and long just the same, with a little waves through it. She was quieter and didn't like the spotlight unless she was performing, but once you got to be around her for a while she could be sarcastic and funny! Her talents weren't quite as developed as Julies', but she had some as well. She could sing, her family and friends would tell her that she'd be famous some day. Sara loved her life, she was carefree and easy going. not nearly as motivated as Julie, but definitely just as happy. The best thing about this story is that these girls were the BEST of friends!! They had grown up together, and hardly ever left each others side since the first time they met at five years old.
One day Sara was feeling particularly discouraged. She was feeling as though she was not as good as Julie at really anything. Julie had more friends than she did, it seemed. Julie was far more talented, and able to accomplish greater things. But, as it goes for most girls in their late teen years, the real big problem was boys. Julie ALWAYS got the boys! She could count 12 boys that had professed their love for her in the past 4 years!! She had just gotten out of a relationship with one of the cutest and most popular boys in school, and already two other boys were crushing on her that she knew of. Sara almost felt a resentment towards Julie for being so perfect! She really was starting to develop an incredibly blinding jealousy!!
That same night Julie and Sara like always had decided to watch a movie at a friends house. Julie had Driven Sara to the friends house and after the movie was over and they waved goodbye they got in the car. They began to talk and after a little while the conversation finally came up about the recent break up. Sara asked "so how have you been doing with things with him?" she didn't have to say the name, she knew that Julie would already have been thinking about him all night.
"Things are fine." she replied, seeming a little broken hearted "but i don't really like to think about it."
respecting her wish Sara dropped the subject immediately.
Julie then asked the dreaded question "how are things with you?"
Usually when Julie asked this Sara didn't feel any pressure to impress Julie with her life, they'd always been best friends and it had never mattered before how accomplished either of them were.
One thing led to another and soon Sara was crying in the front seat to Julie about how small and incomparable to Julie she felt. And of course, how she was frustrated that Julie always got the boys!
Julie looked at Sara and said "I am so glad you told me that because i am feeling just the same way!" she told Sara about how she never felt like she could measure up to her. She went on to say that it was actually really hard to have these boys chasing her around all the time because all she really wanted was friends! she said that it made her so sad to lose friend after friend because they told her they liked her and when things changed the friendship dissolved.
Sara couldn't really remember the rest of the conversation but at the end of it something seemed to click in her head.
"You know what?" she said to Julie, her eyes finally dry from the tears "You are like ice cream, and i am like cheesecake. We both are amazing and good in our own way. We both have incredible qualities that a lot of people like! but the difference is that almost EVERYONE loves ice cream! Yet cheesecake seems to be a more particular dessert, it is something that might not appeal to EVERY person. they are both great, but one is just more specific to its partakers."
this made sense to both of them. the idea that they were both special and great in their own way was perfectly acceptable. and Sarah now understood that she didn't have to be adored by every boy she met. One, perfect boy, someday, is good enough for her.
Whether you're cheesecake or ice cream I hope you can take some sort of advice from this. its a great lesson, one that sometimes is not easy to learn. I hope you took the time to read this, and if you'd like to, feel free to share it with a friend if you find it may be helpful to them.
Most importantly, we need to all learn that we are ALL children of God. We literally have divine worth and potential!
Life is only as beautiful as you make it. Love it.
P.S. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO KAYLEE WOOD! I LOVE YOU! :D
